The spacing of the teeth allows it to reach deep into the undercoat, lifting out loose, shed fur that might otherwise stay trapped and cause matting or discomfort. At the same time, the comb helps separate the coat, making it easier for air to circulate and keeping the fur healthy and shiny.
Slicker Brush – A slicker brush is an excellent tool for overall brushing and keeping a Shiba Inu coat clean because its fine, angled wire bristles are designed to gently work through the dense double coat. The bristles help remove surface debris such as dirt, dust, and small particles that can cling to the fur, while also loosening and collecting loose undercoat during shedding seasons. Regular use of a slicker brush promotes even distribution of natural oils, giving the coat a healthy shine and reducing tangles or clumps.
Coarse Coat Shampoo – Coarse coat shampoos are well-suited for Shiba Inu because they are specially formulated to maintain the natural texture and integrity of a double coat. Shibas have a dense undercoat with a harsher, protective outer layer that should feel firm rather than soft or silky. Regular shampoos, especially those designed for fine or long coats, can overly soften the fur, weigh it down, or strip away the natural oils that keep the coat water- and dirt-resistant. Coarse coat shampoos, on the other hand, gently cleanse while preserving the crisp, slightly harsh texture of the guard hairs.
High Velocity Dryer – A high velocity dryer is one of the most effective tools for managing a Shiba Inu coat, especially during seasonal coat blows. The powerful stream of air penetrates through the dense double coat, loosening and blowing out large amounts of dead undercoat that would otherwise take weeks to shed naturally. This not only speeds up the grooming process but also reduces the amount of loose fur in the home. In addition, the force of the dryer lifts and separates the coat, giving it a fuller, fluffier appearance while helping to prevent clumping or compacted undercoat.
Nail Dremel – A nail Dremel works quickly and effectively on Shiba Inu nails by grinding them down rather than clipping, which provides smoother, more controlled results. When fitted with a diamond bit, the tool is especially efficient because the bit is durable, long-lasting, and maintains consistent grinding power without wearing down easily like sandpaper bands. The diamond bit gently files the nail in small increments, reducing the risk of cracking, splintering, or cutting too short into the quick. It also allows for precise shaping and rounding of the nail edges, which helps prevent snagging on surfaces. Because it removes nail length steadily and safely, a Dremel with a diamond bit can make the process faster, more comfortable, and less stressful for both the dog and the groomer.
DO NOT USE BLADED BRUSHES ON SHIBA INU DOUBLE COAT
Using bladed brushes, such as shedding rakes or furminators, on double-coated dogs like Shiba Inu is not recommended because they can cut or damage the protective guard hairs of the outer coat. These guard hairs are essential for temperature regulation, sun protection, and repelling dirt and moisture. Damaging them can lead to a dull, patchy appearance, coat breakage, and even long-term harm to the coat’s natural growth cycle. Instead of simply removing loose undercoat, bladed tools can strip healthy hair and irritate the skin, increasing the risk of discomfort or skin issues. For double-coated breeds, safer alternatives like slicker brushes, undercoat rakes (without blades), or deshedding combs are better for managing shedding while maintaining the integrity of the coat.
On Walks & At Home
Dog Poop Bags – Being a responsible dog owner means always picking up after your dog, as leaving feces behind can spread disease, attract pests, and pollute soil and water. Using poop bags makes the task simple and hygienic, while also showing respect for the community and shared spaces. Choosing eco-friendly poop bags is an even better option, as they are designed to break down more quickly and with less environmental impact than traditional plastic bags, helping reduce waste and protect the planet for future generations.
Poop Bag Dispenser – A poop bag dispenser is a convenient tool for walks because it keeps bags easily accessible and ready to use whenever needed. Clipped to a leash or belt, it ensures you’re never caught without a way to clean up after your dog, making walks more stress-free and responsible.

Leather is naturally strong and resistant to wear, making it much harder for dogs to chew through, which provides greater safety and peace of mind during walks. Over time, leather also becomes softer and more supple, offering a comfortable grip that reduces hand strain, especially with strong or energetic dogs. Unlike nylon, which can fray or cause rope burns, or silicone, which is more prone to snapping under pressure, a well-made leather leash balances strength with comfort, making it a long-lasting and dependable choice for daily use.
Martingale Collar – Martingale collars are especially important for Shiba Inu because they are skilled at slipping out of traditional flat collars and harnesses. Shibas are known for their independence and strong prey drive, so an unexpected escape can quickly become dangerous. A martingale collar tightens gently when the dog pulls, creating a secure yet comfortable fit that prevents slipping without choking or causing discomfort. This added security helps keep a Shiba safe on walks while still giving owners reliable control, making it an ideal collar choice for this clever and sometimes escape-prone breed.
Harness – If you decide to take the harness route, I recommend this brand. Using a properly fitted harness is important for Shiba Inu because it provides control and security without putting strain on the neck, but it must be designed to allow natural shoulder movement. Harnesses that restrict the shoulders too much can interfere with a dog’s gait, cause discomfort, and even contribute to long-term joint or muscle issues. A well-fitted harness should sit comfortably across the chest and ribs, distributing pressure evenly while leaving the shoulders free to move. This not only keeps the dog safer and more comfortable on walks but also helps maintain healthy posture and movement over time.
Recall Training Leash 50ft – A 50-foot recall training leash is an invaluable tool for safely teaching Shiba Inu reliable recall skills while giving them the freedom to explore. Because Shibas are independent and often have a strong prey drive, practicing recall off-leash too early can be risky. The long line provides a controlled way to let them roam at a distance while still ensuring you maintain physical control if they get distracted or try to run. It also helps build consistency in recall commands by allowing training in real-world settings with more space and distractions. It is never recommended to keep a Shiba off leash but recall training is still important incase of escapes.
Crate – Crates in the 32–37 inch range are a great size for Shiba Inu, offering enough space for them to stand up, turn around, and lie down comfortably without being oversized. The right crate provides a safe, secure environment that can be used for training, travel, or simply giving the dog a quiet place to relax. Properly sized crates help prevent accidents by discouraging dogs from soiling their resting area, and they also create a den-like space that can reduce anxiety. Choosing a crate within this size range ensures your Shiba has both comfort and security, making it a useful tool for responsible ownership. Start with smaller crates for puppies.

Plush toys shaped like small animals can encourage pouncing and shaking, while tug toys allow them to satisfy their instinct to grab and pull. Puzzle toys that dispense treats also appeal to their intelligence and problem-solving nature, offering both mental stimulation and reward. By providing a variety of toys, especially those that squeak or emulate prey, you can keep a Shiba Inu mentally and physically satisfied while channeling their natural hunting instincts in a healthy, playful way. *Tip: A real rabbits fur attachment for your flirt pole will make them go nuts.
